Wang Mengsha

Wang Mengsha was born in Wuxi, China, in 1982. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Art in 2006 from Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, Xi’an, China. Then she studied at Griffith University, Queensland, Australia and the University of Southampton, Southampton, UK.

In her unique ‘Xieyi’ style of paintings, Wang adopts a sense of humor to innovatively combine aspects of traditional paintings of court maidens and beauties with landscape paintings. Akin to the eminent artist Walasse Ting, with whom she shares a hometown, Wang is associated with bright colors and calligraphic strokes. However, as a female artist she applies a feminine perspective to examine the past and look at the future in ways that redefine contemporary ink art in history and modern culture.

Wang’s selected solo exhibitions include: Alisan Fine Arts, Hong Kong (2023), Space Station, Beijing (2021),  Triumph Art Space, Beijing (2017), Gallery 99, Aschaffenburg, Germany (2011).

Wang’s selected group exhibition include: Song Art Museum, Beijing (2020), Hive Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2019), W.Ming Art, New York City, NY (2018), Ucity Art Museum of The Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Guangzhou, China (2017), Galerie 1618, Paris, France (2017), UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2015).

Wang’s artwork has been collected by the Trustee of "The Women's Art Collection", Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge, UK.

Wang Mengsha currently lives and works in Beijing and Wuxi.
